The Best Time of Year to Start a Construction Project in Northern Idaho

October 7, 2025

Timing matters more on construction projects in Northern Idaho than in many other regions. The exterior construction window -- the period when concrete can be poured, roofing installed, and siding applied -- is roughly April through October. Projects that are timed well move efficiently. Projects that aren't lose weeks or months to weather delays.

The Exterior Construction Window

April and May are the earliest practical months for exterior construction in Northern Idaho. The frost is typically out of the ground by mid-April in St. Maries, and temperatures are above freezing consistently enough for concrete work. These are popular months to start foundation work.

June through September is the peak exterior construction window. Dry weather, warm temperatures, and long days allow efficient exterior work. This is when decks, additions, and new home exterior framing move fastest.

October is the shoulder season. Earlier in October, exterior work is still practical in most years. Later in October, the first significant freezes arrive and roofing and siding work becomes weather-dependent.

November through March is the interior construction window. Drywall, finish carpentry, flooring, and mechanical finish work proceed regardless of weather. Projects that have their shell complete before winter can continue interior work through the cold months.

What This Means for Project Planning

For room additions and new construction: plan to have your permit in hand and your foundation started by May or June. This allows exterior framing, roofing, and siding to complete before October, with interior work proceeding through fall and winter.

For deck projects: the best time to break ground on a deck is May or June, when weather is reliable and you can use the finished deck all summer. The worst time to start a deck is September -- you'll finish in fall and barely use it before winter.

For kitchen and bathroom remodels (all interior): these can start any time of year. Timing is driven by cabinet lead times and subcontractor availability, not weather.

When to Start Planning

Because permit processing takes 2 to 4 weeks and the design phase for a significant project takes 4 to 8 weeks, plan to have your design complete and your permit submitted by March if you want to break ground in May.

The best time to start planning a spring construction project is January or February. Vandenberg Construction's spring schedule typically books from these early planning conversations.
