Decks, Awnings & Porches in Northern Idaho

Outdoor living spaces built for Northern Idaho’s seasons—decks, covered porches, awnings, and pergolas.

Expert Decks, Awnings & Porches Across the Idaho Panhandle

Custom decks and outdoor structures built to handle Northern Idaho winters. Composite and pressure-treated options. Fully permitted and engineered. Whether you're in St. Maries, Coeur d'Alene, Kellogg, or anywhere across the Idaho Panhandle, Vandenberg Construction brings over 20 years of general contracting experience to every project.

Ryan Vandenberg is a finish carpenter by trade. That background means the quality standard on every project isn't set by a project manager who's never swung a hammer — it's set by someone who built his career on precision and detail. That shows in how every Vandenberg project is finished.

The Vandenberg Construction Difference

Quality Over Quantity

Ryan Vandenberg founded this company specifically because the industry had let quantity take over at the expense of craftsmanship. Every project we take, we finish right.

3D Design Before We Build

We offer a full design process including 3D renderings before a nail is driven. You see your finished project before we start—no surprises, no guesswork.

Upfront, Honest Pricing

We’re straightforward about what things cost and we never overbid for our own gain. Our quote is our quote.

Finish Carpentry Roots

Ryan started as a finish carpenter. That precision shows in every trim detail, built-in, and cabinet installation we deliver.

Subcontractors We Stand Behind

We hold every subcontractor to the same standard we hold ourselves. If it doesn’t meet our bar, it doesn’t leave our job site.

Owner Involvement Start to Finish

Ryan is involved from your initial inquiry through project completion. You’re not handed off to a project manager who’s never held a tape measure.

Construction

Ryan coordinates all subcontractors and is on-site regularly throughout construction. Quality is checked at every phase — not just at the final walkthrough.

Final Walkthrough & Completion

We walk through the finished project together. If anything isn't right, we fix it before we consider the job complete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Northern Idaho’s freeze-thaw cycles and significant snowfall (60–70 inches per year in St. Maries) put real stress on decking. Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) significantly outperforms pressure-treated wood in this climate—it won’t warp, crack, or splinter through freeze-thaw cycles. For clients who prefer wood, pressure-treated lumber with a quality sealant and annual maintenance is the minimum standard. Vandenberg recommends composite for decks that need to last.
A straightforward deck build typically takes 2–4 weeks from permit to completion. Covered porches and larger structures take 4–8 weeks. May through September is the optimal building window, though we can build into October in good years. Vandenberg starts booking the spring deck season in January and February—the best slots fill quickly.
Decks over 200 square feet or more than 30 inches above grade require a building permit in most Idaho jurisdictions. Vandenberg Construction pulls all required permits and coordinates inspections. Don’t build without one—unpermitted decks create problems at resale.
A covered porch is a permanent roofed structure attached to the house with its own framing and foundation footings. An awning is typically a lighter-weight structure—metal or fabric—mounted to the house without separate footings. For Northern Idaho’s snow loads, Vandenberg recommends engineered covered porches over awnings for any structure larger than a doorway shade.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It depends on whether the existing deck was engineered to carry additional load. Vandenberg does a structural review before committing to any covered deck addition. If the existing framing isn’t adequate, the cost of reinforcement gets built into the quote upfront.
