Idaho has a contractor licensing system, but it's not as comprehensive as some states. Understanding what's required -- and how to verify a contractor's credentials -- is one of the most important steps in protecting yourself before a construction project.
Idaho's Contractor Registration System
Idaho requires public works contractors (those working on public projects) to hold a Public Works Contractor License issued by the Idaho Division of Building Safety. For residential and private commercial construction, Idaho requires contractors to register as a Registered Contractor with the Idaho Contractor Registration system.
Registration requires proof of general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance (or a waiver if the contractor has no employees). It does not require passing a trade exam. This means registration in Idaho is less rigorous than full licensing in states like California, Washington, or Oregon.
The key things to verify before hiring a contractor in Idaho:
- Current registration status -- verifiable at the Idaho Division of Building Safety website.
- General liability insurance -- ask for a certificate of insurance. Minimum $300,000 per occurrence is standard for most residential projects; $1 million for larger projects.
- Workers' compensation coverage -- either active coverage or a legitimate exemption.
Subcontractor Licensing
Idaho does require trade-specific licenses for electrical and plumbing contractors. HVAC contractors operating in Idaho also need licensing. Verify that every subcontractor working on your project holds the appropriate license for their trade.
Unlicensed electrical work is a fire risk and a liability. Unpermitted plumbing work can void homeowners insurance coverage on water damage claims. These are not hypothetical risks -- they affect real homeowners every year.
How to Verify a Contractor
The Idaho Division of Building Safety maintains a searchable database of registered contractors at dbs.idaho.gov. You can verify whether a contractor's registration is current and whether there are any complaints or actions on record.
Ask every contractor you're considering for:
- Their Idaho contractor registration number
- A current certificate of general liability insurance
- Workers' compensation insurance certificate or exemption documentation
- License numbers for any licensed trades they're claiming to self-perform
