A master suite addition -- dedicated master bedroom with ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet -- is the most commonly requested addition project at Vandenberg Construction. Here's how to plan it right.
The Functional Requirements
Sleeping space: Most older Northern Idaho master bedrooms are 12 by 12 feet -- functional for a queen bed but cramped for a king. Size any new master bedroom to how you actually live. Minimum 14 by 16 for a king with furniture.
Ensuite bathroom: The value is in a bathroom designed for two users -- double vanity, dedicated shower (not a tub surround), and adequate lighting. Vandenberg's standard master bath scope includes custom tile shower with frameless glass, double vanity, and storage.
Walk-in closet: Minimum 6 by 8 feet, preferably larger, with a custom built-in organization system. This is a daily-use quality-of-life investment with strong ROI at resale.
Layout Considerations for Northern Idaho Homes
Most additions in the St. Maries area are single-story structures added to the rear or side of an existing ranch or split-level home.
Roofline integration is the critical design challenge. The addition's roofline needs to connect to the existing house in a way that looks intentional and doesn't create ice dam risks. We work through this in the 3D design process before framing begins.
Foundation type: Most Northern Idaho homes have crawl space foundations. An addition typically continues with crawl space or slab.
Heating integration: Adding a master suite requires extending the existing HVAC or adding a mini-split. Ryan coordinates with the mechanical sub on the right approach for each home.
The 3D Design Advantage
The relationship between bedroom, bathroom entry, closet, and connection back to the main house is much clearer in 3D than in a floor plan. Vandenberg builds renderings for every master suite addition before finalizing design.
Cost Range
